The government must take a tougher role in enforcing the Modern Slavery Act’s measures on transparency in supply chains, a report commissioned by the Modern Slavery and Human Rights Policy and Evidence Centre has found.
The centre’s recommendations include creating a central registry for modern slavery statements and imposing financial penalties on non-compliant organisations. The report was developed by the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law and the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights.
Co-author Lisa Hsin, of Bonavero, said: ‘Businesses, if they want, can find it very easy to hide behind sometimes detailed statements.’
