Mental wellbeing charity, LawCare has reported a ‘dramatic increase’ in calls from legal professionals with career concerns.
LawCare’s 2022 statistics and impact report, published this week, show 22% of those seeking support were primarily concerned about their career, compared to just over 8% in 2021. It equalled for the first time the 22% of callers seeking help for stress.
Elizabeth Rimmer, LawCare chief executive, said the pandemic could have resulted in legal professionals being ‘less willing to stay in careers and workplaces that don’t meet their needs and expectations and could be undermining their mental health’.
Moreover, as in the previous year, about 60% of the 849 calls were from trainees, pupils or lawyers with less than five years PQE, suggesting junior professionals are not being given enough support at work.
LawCare also saw a 3% increase in contacts from men, reflecting its work during the year to encourage more men in law to seek support for their mental health.
