The Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett has lauded the ‘extraordinary dedication’ of judges and magistrates he met while visiting courts.
In a YouTube video message, posted this month, one year after being sworn in, he praised the ‘army of women and men upholding the rule of law, largely unacknowledged except by the most important people of all, those whose problems they have tackled and resolved’.
He spoke about the importance of partnerships between the judiciary and the professions, court officials, the prosecutors and other public bodies as the courts modernisation programme proceeds.
‘Nowhere are those partnerships more important than with the professions as we continue to strive to attract the best to become judges.’
The Lord Chief Justice said he wanted to explain better ‘what [judges] do and why’ to the public, media, schools, universities and Parliament.
