An anti-Brexit campaigner, the founder of First 100 Years and a leading sports and entertainment barrister are among five candidates shortlisted for Legal Personality of the Year in the 2018 LexisNexis Legal Awards (formerly known as the Halsbury Awards).
Dana Denis-Smith, founder of First 100 Years, a high-profile media campaign to celebrate the contribution of women to the law and highlight female role models for young lawyers, is also up for the award. She is joined by investment manager and Brexit campaigner Gina Miller, lead claimant in the historic Article 50 case before the Supreme Court.
Also on the shortlist are: Kingsley Napley dispute resolution partner Ryan Mowat, who acted for casinos against poker player Phil Ivey in the biggest ever gambling industry case; Sean Jones QC, a high-profile sports and employment barrister, and the brain behind the ‘Billable Hour’ campaign, which raised more than £205,000 for Syrian refugee children; and Clive Stafford Smith, who founded non-profit human rights group Reprieve, and has represented more than 300 prisoners on death row, succeeding in all but six cases.
