The laboratory is donating £5 to charities for every legal testing instruction it receives from local authorities and family law firms during 2021, as part of its Giving Back campaign, launched earlier this year. It has raised more than £9,000 in the first three months, and is giving equal shares to the National Youth Advocacy Service (NYAS), National Association for Children of Alcoholics (Nacoa), Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs (SFAD) and TGP Cymru.
Rachel Davenport, director at AlphaBiolabs, said: ‘We carry out a wide range of drug and alcohol testing for local authorities and organisations involved in family law and child welfare, and our work therefore brings us into contact with some of the country’s most vulnerable children and families.
‘We were concerned to learn how some charities working with these communities were struggling, especially with the increased demand for their services during the pandemic.’
Paula Hanford, head of income generation at NYAS, said: ‘The recent generous donation will help us to transform the future life chances for care leavers by providing them with much needed support to enable them to achieve their goals.’
