Eurozone crisis had major impact on EU legislation in 2011

The Eurozone crisis was responsible for most of the significant European Union legislation passed last year, with the most high-profile being the “six-pack” of five regulations and one directive aimed at strengthening economic governance.

By contrast, scant progress was made on the “social policy agenda”, which includes employment, labour standards and social issues such as gender inequality.

The EU introduced a total of 1,600 legislative changes in 2011, an eight per cent increase on the previous year. These mainly consisted of updates and amendments, according to Sweet & Maxwell.
