New guidance on dress codes and appearance in the workplace has been issued by Acas. It covers religious dress, uniforms, jewellery, tattoos, piercings and other garb. Dress codes should be related to the job and be reasonable in nature, it advises, and employers should clearly set out in the organisation’s policy. Flip flops may be banned on health and safety reasons, while employers may have a reasonable business reason for asking employees to remove piercings and cover up tattoos if they want to promote a certain image through their workers.
