The horrifying case of Andrew Malkinson, who spent 17 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, is not a one-off or an aberration, NLJ columnist Jon Robins writes in his column this week. Instead, it’s part of a wider systemic problem.

In the first of a two-part series, Robins traces the many appalling twists and turns in this miscarriage of justice. He highlights the collapse in compensation payouts—a point missed by nearly all the press coverage—as well as other shocking flaws in the compensation system, some stretching back to the days of the previous Labour government.

He expresses hope that the outrage over the Malkinson case will in some way help bring about improvements in support for other victims of miscarriage of justice.
