Sir Brian Leveson has warned MPs the criminal court system ‘cannot survive as it presently is’
Sir Brian, who issued part one of his independent review of the criminal courts in July, proposing fewer jury trials and a third tier of judge-only trials, gave evidence to the Justice Committee this week.
He told MPs he believed simply increasing sitting days on its own would not bring the cases backlog down, as there was too often no barrister or prosecutor available. He emphasised the need for ‘wholesale systemic reform’.
