More than 1,500 lawyers have signed a letter called for a second referendum on Brexit.

A group, Lawyers for a People’s Vote, organised the letter, which was sent to the prime minister this week. Signatories include leading QCs, barristers, solicitors and academics.

Former Attorney General Dominic Grieve, writing on the group’s website, describes the argument in favour of a second vote as ‘overwhelming’.

The letter states that ‘voters are entitled to know what they are voting for’, and points out that ‘a people’s vote is the most credible and democratic way to ensure the legitimacy of a decision that will profoundly impact generations to come’.
