Dominic Regan provides his Christmas wine recommendations

Christmas is the one time of year when people who do not drink might indulge and those who do are tempted to push the boat out. Here are some highly recommended bottles which represent quality and value for money.

Fizz

Champagne is the ultimate sparkling wine. There are so many marques out there. Here are the ones I really rate. Tesco own label non-vintage is perfectly balanced and will most likely be on special offer. Even cheaper at the same store is Delauney at £14 a bottle. Aldi claims to sell 3,000 bottles a day of its own £10.99 brand. Decent, but not as good as the Tesco offerings.

If you feel obliged to buy a big name brand then Piper Heidsieck and Taittinger deliver quality at a fair price.

Tesco Finest Prosecco, £8, is made by the respected Venetian producer Bisol. Bottles sold under that label by some merchants cost 50 % more so it is great value. Waitrose Prosecco is decent but £10.99.

Even cheaper is the Aldi
