Bereavement advice from Acas

Acas has published a new guide for employers on what to do when employees are bereaved. It has been developed in partnership with Cruse Bereavement Care, bereavement leave campaigner Lucy Herd and other organisations. Acas chair Sir Brendan Barber says: “It includes advice for managers on how to get the balance right in order to be supportive, compassionate, flexible and practical towards employees who are dealing with bereavement.” Its advice highlights that grief does not have predicted stages and phases, that employers should have a clear policy on it and train managers and selected staff, and that the employee may have increased caring responsibilities.
